Questions
What are ThinTanks™ made of?
ThinTanks™ have been manufactured for almost two decades utilizing a proprietary UV stabilized polyethylene rotomolding process. ThinTanks™’ polyethylene manufacturing process contains zero BPA, and features a 3/8” thick sturdy wall construction, reducing sunlight reaching your stored water to limit bacterial growth. Just as important our tanks feature food grade polyethylene which is strong, durable and will not crack, corrode or rust.

Are ThinTanks™ prone to splitting/bursting?
No. We manufacture our tanks as one complete unit to eliminate any seams/joints. Lines may be visible on the outside of the tanks but that is just part of the molding process. Also, internal cross-connectors ensure that when water fills the tank, there is sufficient strength to support all that weight. ThinTanks™ have been manufactured, tested and installed for over 15 years in Australia and other parts of the world, exposed to extreme sun and heat. These are some of the sturdiest water tanks ever made.
When exposed to freezing temperatures ThinTanks™ are not worried. You can drain your tank completely during winter months, or keep it filled – just make sure to stay below 3/4 of your tank capacity to allow room for water to expand.

How heavy are ThinTanks™?
When empty ThinTanks™ weigh 110lbs all the way to 400+lbs. For positioning on site, these tanks have been designed to be moved by a variety of means – by hand, dolly or machine. Consult with your landscape contractor or installer for the best method at your site.
When full, ThinTanks™ are very heavy. 1000L of water weighs 1000kg or 1 metric tonne. This is why it is imperative to have a solid base in place before you place your ThinTank™.
How do ThinTanks™ get installed?
Since a completely filled ThinTank™ is very heavy (up to 5 tonnes), a solid base is imperative. It is recommended to install a reinforced concrete pad before setting your ThinTank™ in place. Alternatively, you can utilize appropriate concrete or stone paving materials. Most importantly, a proper sub-base needs to be in place, composed of gravel or crushed stone, adhering to all local guidelines and best-practices. Makesure, to use the appropriate floor or wall bracket once the ThinTank™ is set in place.
When the tank is fully installed, the inlet and outlet water connections need to be made. Follow the included ThinTanks™ installation instructions for more details. Finally, once you have completed these steps, you can install ThinTanks™ accessories, following the included instructions.
Can ThinTanks™ really be made into a fence?
Yes. There are several ways to configure ThinTanks™, including in a straight line as an alternative to a fence. This configuration would completely replace an existing fence or serve as a new fence installation. It’s really quite simple, start with a sturdy base, set your ThinTanks™, utilize the appropriate floor brackets, and finally connect your tanks together with a tank connector kit. Rainwater will fill the tanks to an equal level, and you can use water from either end of the ThinTank™ fence.
Is tank water safe to drink?
Even though ThinTanks™ are made from drinking water and food grade polyethylene we do not recommend using rainwater for drinking or food preparation. The other materials in your ThinTanks™ installation and roof may have contaminants that cause the water filing into the tank to be contaminated as well. If you choose to install a rainwater tank to provide grey water for your home/building, installation requirements are more stringent. Please consult with your local plumbing and building codes/standards for more details.
How big of a tank should I select?
The following factors will help determine the most appropriate sized tank for you:
- Available space for the tank – Consider the footprint of the ThinTanks™ product range in relation to your ground space available. Also consider other obstacles such as windows, hot water systems and air conditioning units. Finally, make sure you have sufficient clear access for the tank to be moved into place.
- Water usage requirements – If you intend to use your harvested water for general garden watering or pool top-up you will require a larger volume of water than if you are only using it to supply your ThinPot vertical garden.
- The size of your roof catchment area – The area of your roof that has downpipes directed into your ThinTank™. The larger your roof space the smaller the tank required as it will receive more water every time it rains. As a rule of thumb 1m2 of roof space collects 10 litres of rainwater for every 1cm of rain or 10sq.ft of roof space collects 5.6 gallons of rainwater for every 1in of rain. Just a half inch of rain falling on a 1,000-square-foot roof will yield almost 300 gallons of water.
